United we Stand, Divided we ‘DIE’

So now we will have a brand new bridge at the Elphinstone road station, yeah it took 23 lives, more importantly, their videos and pictures of dying like insects for the bureaucracy and ministers to wake up. We made a hue and cry about this one incidence but people forget that every day these locals take an average of 9 lives; unfortunately, we don’t have videos of these individual deaths to share on Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp. This has become a routine now; you need to die to get basic facilities in this country. You need to die in a pothole to get a road repaired, you need to die in a drainage manhole so that all manholes are properly covered, you need to die in a building crash to get the dilapidated building reconstructed,  even our newborn babies need to die to get their oxygen supply and the worst affected are farmers who are killing themselves for a small amount of loan.

It's really easy to blame the Government but I feel the fault lies with us, how can we ignore the fact that we elected them to rule us. People of this country have been knowingly electing corrupt parties in power. Can we really expect good governance from parties which are known to be corrupt? There is an old saying ‘you reap what you sow'; when we keep voting leaders on the basis of caste, religion, class or just sale our vote for Rs 500 we will continue to die like insects. The chain reaction starts as soon as we vote a party to rule us for next five years. We should stop blaming the government lets understand the system and take collective responsibility for this mess. Since Independence, our voting criteria is to elect a ‘less corrupt’ party instead of electing a ‘more honest’ party. Although since last 2-3 elections we have an option of NOTA unfortunately only 1 % of the population has voted for NOTA. If we are ‘OK’ with a corrupt party and accept corruption as a way of life we have no right to demand good governance.

These 23 lives belong to different caste and religions, but our protest is visible only on social media, whereas when it comes to our caste or religion we take to the streets. As always we will move on but not the families of the victims may not. Today they are the victims of this system tomorrow it could be any one of us. Why wake up only when our own house is on fire? We have a choice; to die like insects or to fight. The Ignorance level about Politics and Governance in our country is the biggest problem we are facing especially with our young generation. Even well-educated professionals are out of sync with the reality. As John F Kennedy rightly said ‘The ignorance of one voter in a Democracy impairs the security of ALL’.

Why are we so selfish? Just like we all are so ambitious about our own careers why aren’t we concern about the career of our country? This country has a simple wish of food, shelter, clothing for every citizen and a secured peaceful life. Let’s be politically active and well informed, discussing topics like Kangna's fight with Hrithik or the features of new I phone 8 is a waste of time. Let’s discuss issues like corruption and find solutions, let us together push some good leaders into the Parliament and Assemblies. More importantly, let’s take it to the streets and let them know that we won’t die without a fight.     ‌
