A Minister is the leader of the administration; after we elect political parties to power they form a government. Along with the Chief/Prime Minister a Health minister is also sworn in, he is in charge of upgrading, developing, and maintaining our Healthcare System with whatever budget he is allotted. Most of the money is used to keep the current Health care system running, although as we are all aware that the entire administration is corrupt from top to bottom due to which no amount of taxpayers’ money is spent without a range of people having their cut at every stage of the expenditure. Incidentally, it is the Minister who can control the menace of corruption in his department only if he has the ‘Will’ power. Tenders are floated contractors, bureaucrats, ministers make sure they are benefited it doesn’t matter if the work order is properly executed. Virus-infected Healthcare system of Mumbai is showing symptoms of failure.

Decades of neglect, unaccountability, and corruption in the Government-run hospitals of Mumbai are bearing fruits at this crucial time. I had the opportunity of visiting some of these state Run hospitals where young doctors and staff are highly hostile towards ordinary citizens. Over the years we have come across numerous news stories of hospital staff not giving dead bodies without a bribe. Even during non-covid time, we have witnessed two patients sharing one bed and another patient below the bed. The majority of the staff indulge in malpractices and are notorious Shirkers. The recent videos showing dead bodies of covid victims lying next to under-treatment patients is a classic work culture in a state-run hospital. To expect these overpaid, irresponsible Healthcare Servants to shed their skin overnight and become a dedicated, hardworking, brave Covid warriors is too much to ask.
